ORD C36454 - Repealing Solar Panel and Electric Vehicle Permit Waivers

What is it?

This Ordinance would remove waivers passed in 2018 that waived building and construction permit fees related to installation of solar energy systems.

While this certainly seems like a problem worth solving, it ignores the reality of the climate crisis and the urgency of the moment we are in. There are other ways to compensate city departments that perform inspections without adding costs to clean energy installation.

ORD C36459 - Building Opportunities For Housing

What is it?

This ordinance would make changes to the municipal building code that will promote infill development and transit-oriented development. These changes will create more housing options for Spokanites that take advantage of existing infrastructure (sewer, water, solid waste), while helping to prevent suburban sprawl.

This opportunity was raised to us by our friends at Futurewise. You can sign on to their action letter here.

Tips & Suggestions When advocating to Spokane City Council

How To Attend a Public City Council Meeting

  • City Council Meetings occur almost every Monday, at 6PM, in the Council Chambers at Spokane City Hall
  • If you’d like to give public testimony, you must sign up between 5PM – 6PM that day just outside of City Council Chambers.
  • You can view City Council Meeting Agenda’s and Minutes at the city council webpage.
  • Testimony can be for up to 3 minutes.
  • You do not need to give testimony to show up in support or opposition of legislation. Simply being in the crowd and standing while others give testimony is powerful as well.

Votes & deliberations are often deferred

  • Occasionally City Council will defer deliberation on an ordinance or resolution to a later date.
  • This often happens within two hours the City Council Meeting.
  • Please keep an eye out for deferments.
  • We will do our best to keep this webpage as up to date as possible, but we make no guarantees as to our ability to be constantly up to date.

You can also send a personal email to City Council

  • If you can’t be to the meeting in person, or would rather provide testimony online, you can always send an email to citycouncil@spokanecity.org.
  • Any emails sent in will be received by all city council members and their aide, and will be entered into public record in relation to the ordinance or resolution.
  • Please be sure to state the Ordinance name and description when expressing support or opposition.
